MLCA Celebrates 44th Anniversary
2008 marks the 40th year that the Miami Lakes Civic Association has worked to make Miami Lakes a better place.  In fact it was MLCA that launched the successful effort to incorporate Miami Lakes into our wonderful town.  MLCA will be celebrating at its monthly happy hours, a special picnic picnic and a social gala in the fall.  For more information on how you can be included in any of the Anniversary celebrations, please email us at mlcivic.org.

Mayor Slaton Donates Domino Tables
Thanks to the hard work of the MLCA's Social Committee 'Domino Night' is the most popular event at the Miami Lakes Community Center.  Now with the generousity of Mayor Wayne Slaton, the participants at the monthly game night are playing on regulation tables.  Slaton, a regular player at Domino Night, donated the tables at the April event.
If you're interested in playing, MLCA's Domino Night are the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the community center.
Pre-registration is recommended as the number of tables is limited.

MLCA ADOPTS HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD
Although barely 4 years old, Miami Lakes has a rich history that precedes the town's incorporation.  MLCA recently adopted the Miami Lakes Historic Preservation Board with the goal of identifying and preserving pieces of the Town's history, as well as developing and maintaining historic archives for the town.  This will include Madden's Hammock and its artifacts, local historic trees and buildings, as well as photographs and ancient Indian artifacts.

MLCA was approached by Miami Lakes Council member Mary Collins who wanted to see the town's history and artifacts preserved. The Board will be appointing seven to nine members to serve on the Preservation Board and attend quarterly meetings.  Residents interested in serving on the committee and have an architecture, history, art, horticulture or related background are encouraged to call 305-557-7755 or email mlcivic.org with "Preservation Board" in the subject heading.

MLCA INTRODUCES "REMODEL-RECYCLE PROGRAM"
Thinking out of the box, the MLCA has initiated a wonderful new program to help beautify the Miami Lakes and support a good cause.  The group's  new "Remodel-Recycle Program" provides a unique opportunity for residents to keep their neighborhood swales free of construction debris and at the same time support Habitat for Humanity.  With Miami-Dade County Solid Waste often taking 4-8 weeks for scheduled pick ups, unsightly construction debris is often left on residential swales for prolonged periods of time.

Now, MLCA is encouraging residents to call the Habitat Re-Store when remodeling and the charity will pick up their old cabinets, vanities, plumbing & electrical fixtures, doors and windows that are in good working order.  Mayor Wayne Slaton has worked with Habitat for Humanity in the past and has agreed to help promote this program in an effort to keep Miami Lakes clean and build more Habitat homes.

Donations are tax deductible and proceeds are used to build more Habitat for Humanity homes.  The free pick-ups can take up to two weeks to schedule, so it's important for residents to plan ahead.      To schedule a pick-up, residents should call  305-259-2891 or 954-763-7771

DOMINO NIGHT DEEMED A POPULAR SUCCESS
Wide smiles and furrowed brows of concentration turned out on January 7, as the Miami Lakes Civic Association hosted their first monthly Dominos Night.   The night was deemed a big success as Miami Lakes residents filled all the available tables to play one of the Caribbean's most popular games and socialize with other residents.   Pre-registration for the February 4th Domino Night was already filled well in advance of the event.

Not only have residents responded enthusiastically with strong attendance, but the community has also stepped up to sponsor MLCA's Domino Nights. Navarro Discount Pharmacy and Sedano's Market donated the domino sets and supplies while Mayor and domino player Wayne Slaton has signed on as the sponsor for refreshments and new domino tables, accordingly to Garcia.

Domino Nights are held the first Wednesday of every month   Pre-registration and punctual arrival is recommended because space is limited.  Instruction is always available for beginners.  Miami Lakes residents can pre-register by calling 305-362-2495.

MLCA initiates canal clean-up

Tires, paint buckets, a car chassis, and wooden structures are just some of the items the Miami Lakes Civic Association recently discovered along Miami Lakes' canal banks.  As a result, the 40-year old community group is kicking off a clean-up effort of the town's waterways.  The group is first focusing on canal C-8, which runs along the Palmetto Expressway and continues east to the town's boundary at NW 57th Avenue.   Illegal dumping in that canal includes the area directly across from Windmill Gate Townhouses, as well as the banks along the Palmetto's Perimeter Road and east of Celebration Point condominiums.  The Civic Association initiated the project because of its importance to both Miami Lakes residential and business communities.

Town is awarded grant for Madden's Hammock
With the persistence of Town Manager Alex Rey, Town Staff and Council, Madden's Hammock is on its way to becoming a beautiful Miami Lakes passive park.  In October, Mayor Wayne Slaton, Manager Alex Rey and Assistant Manager Linda Reale presented the grant application in Tallahassee.  They were victorious in obtaining the grant and now the next steps of the project are proceeding.  First, the property must be re-appraised and a selling price negotiated with the owner, Lowell Dunn.  Then the matching funds from Miami-Dade County must be obtained.  Check back to this site for updates on the progress of this wonderful park.

Mayor's Neighborhood Grant Program launched to help beautify neighborhoods
Recently, Mayor Wayne Slaton introduced the Mayor's Neighborhood Grant Program to help fund neighborhood improvements.  This is an excellent way for Homeowners Associations to beautify their neighborhoods and apply for matching funds from the Town of Miami Lakes.  Projects may include landscaping, signage, entrance features, fountains, and more.   If you would like more information on how this program may help your neighborhood, please call Mayor Slaton at Town Hall (305-364-6100).

MLCA's H.O.A. Presidents & Officers Committee a big success

Town Happy Hours receive festive response
MLCA understands that Miami Lakes residents like to have fun.   To provide a festive social outlet, the MLCA began hosting Town Happy Hours.  These informal gatherings provide a great way for new residents to make friends and for other residents to reconnect with neighbors. So far, the Happy Hours have been held at La Tasca Restaurant and Cancun Grill and featured 2-for-1 drinks and appetizer specials. Subsequent Town Happy Hours will be hosted at various area restaurants.  If you would like information about future happy hours or social events, please get your free subscription to Miami Lakes Email Updates (see story above) or watch for details in the Miami Laker.   If your establishment is interested in hosting a Town Happy Hour, please call the MLCA at 305-558-7755.  The happy hours are open to MLCA members and non-members alike.
